In the framework of the UK COP26 Presidency, the British High Commission Nicosia, in collaboration with the Cyprus Bar Association and the Department of Law of the University of Cyprus, is organising a public event titled:

Governing Net Zero: Trends in legislation and litigation in the transition to low carbon economies.

Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Catherine Higham from the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change & the Environment at London School of Economics, the coordinator of the Climate Change Laws of the World project – the most comprehensive global resource on climate legislation and policy.

The event will take place on the 15th of March at 17:00 – 19:00 at the University of Cyprus campus in Aglantzia (Anastasios Leventis Building, room B108).

During the presentation, Dr Higham will discuss about the emergence of Net Zero as a key policy goal and it’s translation from a matter of science to one of international law through the Paris Agreement. The importance of climate change legislation and the critical functions and features of such legislation will also be presented as well as the various roles played by climate change litigation, either as a “gap filler” in the absence of legislation, as a key accountability mechanism where legislation exists, and, increasingly as an avenue for debate about the just transition

Short commentaries will follow as well as a Q&A session and discussion.

A reception will follow.

The event is accredited with 2 verified CPD units for purposes of the Continuing Professional Development of Lawyers and they will be upload to the portal by the Cyprus Bar Association, following the completion of the event.

Please register for the event here.

Attendees will be required to present a SafePass. Please wear your facemask and comply with COVID-19 protective measures during the event.
